Now that the tax season has officially begun, you may already be planning how you’re going to spend your refund. If you are in those planning stages, you might also be wondering where your refund is. Fortunately, the IRS has a tool called “Where’s My Refund” that allows taxpayers to check the status of their refunds at any time.
If you filed your tax returns electronically, you can go to the IRS website and use the “Where’s My Refund” tool seven days after e-filing. You will need to input your SSN, your filing status, and the exact amount of your return. Although you may be anxious to know more about when you’ll receive your refund before this time, you need to wait the seven days or you may not receive any information.
If you filed a paper tax return, you won’t be able to check on the status of your refund quite as quickly. In fact, you will need to wait four to six weeks after you have filed before your information will show up on the “Where’s My Refund” tool. If you haven’t filed your taxes already and you want to be able to check on your refund much sooner, you may want to consider filing electronically.
